ECNU professor gets title from ENS de Lyon

A French elite higher education institution has bestowed upon He Mingyuan, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and professor of ECNU, an honorary doctorate.

He was awarded the title by the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, also known as the ENS Lyon, at a ceremony on May 12 in Lyon, witnessed by ENS Lyon's president Jean-Francois Pinton and supervisor Francoise Mountin Civil, the Chinese consul general in Lyon, Wang Ju, and more than 100 scholars from all over the world.

Globally, 20 scholars have won the title for remarkable contributions in humanities and sciences from the ENS Lyon since it was re-organized in 2010 by Fontenay-Saint-Cloud and Ecole Normale Supérieure Lyon that specializes in natural sciences. Among the awardees was Prof. Yu Lizhong, the incumbent president of New York University Shanghai and former president of ECNU, who was granted the honor in December 2009.

Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, in 1940, Prof. He Mingyuan majored in synthetics and applied chemistry at China Textile University, which has been renamed Donghua University. After graduation in 1961, he began working in Sinopec Corporation Research Institute of Petroleum Processing and was promoted to be the chief engineer. He and his team have made outstanding achievements to China's economic development.

In 2000, he was hired by ECNU as a professor, where he established a research team on green chemistry and chemical engineering. 

He is also an active promoter of educational and scientific exchanges between China and France, and has achieved substantial results. Among the examples is the Sino-French joint doctoral training program. During the past 12 years, 52 ECNU students have been admitted to ENS Lyon and 24 of them have gained a doctorate degree.

He has hosted a number of top-level academic exchange activities in China and France since 2010 to enhance cooperation between scientists in both countries.

As one of France's four École Normale Supérieure, ENS de Lyon is an elite French public higher education institution under the ENS Paris, which has become a platform for many of France's brightest young people to pursue high-level careers in government and academia. Founded in 1880, it is associated with a strong French tradition of excellence and public service, and has also become a reference center for educational sciences. It is the only grande école in France to have departments of research in all the natural, social, and human sciences, except law and medicine. It is considered as one of the three most prestigious and best French universities and is ranked as the 100th in the world.

A profile of He Mingyuan

He was elected an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1995 and won the National Invention Award in 1996. Between 1997 and 2010, he was vice director of the Department of Chemistry of CAS and received the Ho Leung Ho Lee Fund Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2001. In 2005, he took the post of director of the Green Chemistry Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society and elected to be a member of the CAS Presidium in 2011. In 2012, he was granted China Catalytic Achievement Award and awarded the L’ordre des Palmes académiques by the French education ministry.
