According to the latest results of the Nature Index released by Nature Publishing Group, ECNU ranks 123rd among global universities, 36th in the Asia-Pacific Region and 19th in Chinese mainland. The data were collected from the whole year of 2017.

It was significant that this year the university has moved up 19 spots in the global ranking category, 7 in Asia-Pacific and 1 in China.

Chinese universities hold 93 spots on the Global 500 list in the following disciplines: physical sciences (60), life sciences (48), earth & environmental sciences (39), and Nature & Science index (46). In Chinese universities, however, it was chemistry that took a leading role in performance ratings outpacing the other three subjects, with a larger number making it to the top of the list.

ECNU once again found its name among the Global 100 in chemistry, taking 74th place among reputable global research institutions and 62nd among global universities. It was followed by Purdue University of the United States.

The university overtook its rivals for 14th place in earth & environmental sciences on the Chinese mainland and 149th worldwide. It stood at 29th in life sciences on the mainland and 351st globally, as well as 37th in physical sciences on the mainland and 273rd internationally.

The Nature Index is a global indicator that is used to evaluate the output of high-quality research purported by universities and research institutes from across the world. It was introduced by Nature Publishing Group on November 13, 2014, to reflect on the quality of scientific research and inquiry. The rankings are based on the WFCweighted fractional count.

The findings were based on the number of research papers published within 68 leading science journals from the previous year. By way of statistical analysis, the index is able to evaluate approximately 60,000 high-quality research articles, which amount to a total of 20,000 universities and research institutes worldwide. The selected 68 science journals cover four fields, namely chemistry, life sciences, earth and environment sciences, and physical sciences.
