The Night of Liwa River: New Year Concert was staged on Dec. 29 and 30, 2016 in the auditorium at the Zhongshanbei campus, attracting an audience of 1,500, including ECNU leaders, philanthropist representatives who donated generously to the university, and alumni from across the country.
A singing group of undergraduates from the School of Urban and Regional Science, which is the champion of the 3rd Voice of School singing competition, lifted the curtain on the concert with the song of “Oh, ECNU”.
In welcome speeches, Tong Shijun, top leader of ECNU and chairman of the university council, and university president Chen Qun sent their New Year best wishes and briefed the attendees on achievements the university has made in the past year.
Harp and stringed instrument music dominated the first part of the concert while in the latter half, symphony “Gold and Silver Waltz”, played by the university's orchestra and conducted by Prof. Chang Lin, added to the festive mood to the upcoming Spring Festival with sprightly rhythm and rich melody.
The Shanghai Baroque Male Quartet pushed the concert to the peak with songs of “Play My Favorite Lute”, “An Evening Outside Moscow”, and “Partisan's Song”.
Well-known huqin player Huo Yonggang refreshed Peking Opera “Deep Night” by combining the melodious tunes of jinghu, a small two-string bowed instrument, with strong sounds of dagu, which intoxicated the audience with the artistic charms of Peking Opera.
Famous soprano Fang Qiong, who is also a vocal professor, performed folk songs of “A Fair Maiden” and “Swan Geese”. The ebullient performances by the orchestra of symphonies “The Waltz” and “Romania Rhapsodie” captivated classic music fans.
Before the concert ended, Prof. Fang and Shanghai Baroque Male Quartet encored the song of “A Night to Remember”.
