The Four Seasons Education (Group) has donated 100 million yuan (US$14.7 million) to ECNU for infrastructure construction as well as scientific research and discipline development of the Department of Mathematics.
Its founder and chairman, Tian Peiqing, made the donation to Tong Shijun, university council chairman of ECNU at a ceremony on March 30.
Graduating from ECNU’s Department of Mathematics in 1984, the teacher-turned entrepreneur had a reputation in math Olympic contest teaching domestically and had led the Shanghai teams to compete in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) and the Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC). Tian founded the Four Seasons Education in 2007.
“The time when I studied at ECNU was the happiest four years in my life,” Tian said at the donation ceremony. “I have also received generous help from my alma mater and alumni with the development of my company. It’s my duty to pay back.”
Tong extended heartfelt thanks to Tian and said he took pride in the achievement made by Tian.
“It is a mission for a university to cultivate talents. The success of graduates is a pride for all of us,” he said.
Tong acknowledged the donation is of great importance to the great-leap-forward development of the Department of Mathematics as well as the education cause of the university, promising that the money will be used entirely for the purposes specified by the donor.
Tan Shengli, dean of the Department of Mathematics, explained to Tian about how the money will be used.
