The University of Haifa and ECNU ink new deals and exchange programs


ON March 19-20, a group of academic leaders from the University of Haifa in Israel visited ECNU, including Prof. Gustavo Mesch, President of the University of Haifa, Israel; Edi Barkai, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences; and Professor Moshe Inbar, Department of Evolution and Environmental Biology. This is now the second time that the University of Haifa’s President has visited ECNU since last November when he arrived for the Joint Research Institute of Transforming Science and Technology, an initiative co-organized by the two universities in the Zizhu International Education Zone in Minhang.

The purpose of this visit was to review the current work of the joint research institute and discuss how the institute can support the blueprint of Shanghai's “China-Israel Innovation Park”. It intends to expand in cooperation between the two universities, especially in the field of humanities and social sciences.

President of ECNU Qian Xuhong first extended his warm welcome to the Israeli delegation. He pointed out that Israel, as a leading model of global technological innovation and achievements in advanced sciences, has the experience and institutional advantages for an innovation-driven country. For the further development of advanced technologies, Shanghai’s “China-Israel Innovation Park” hopes to initiate more exchanges between the two universities on joint research institutes.

Prof. Mesch strongly agreed with the viewpoints on technological innovations and education from ECNU’s leaders. He also listened to Qian Haifeng's report on the progress of the current work of the Joint Research Institute and the introduction of the One Body Two Wings development plan. The two sides also exchanged opinions on the holding of the research management committee, doctoral training seminars, and joint applications of funded research projects set to take place in the second half of this year.

In addition, after introducing the predominant disciplines and common characteristics shared between ECNU and Haifa University, both sides discussed their expectations on further cooperation in the field of humanities and social sciences. In hopes to enlarge exchange programs, such as exchange students, summer internships, innovation and entrepreneurship summer camps. These initiatives offer a variety of opportunities for ECNU students to engage with overseas studies in Israel.

Meanwhile, students from University of Haifa are also encouraged to participate in ECNU’s summer programs consisting of custom-made, short-term exchanges. After the talks, the presidents of the two universities jointly signed the Global Green MBA Project Cooperation Agreement and the Statistics Master's Joint Training Project Cooperation Agreement.
