ECNU’s International Students Football Team ousted 5 other squads to take the champion of 2017 Normal Universities International Student Football Competition on May 7. The international football tournament, hosted by the Ministry of Education at Beijing Normal University, composed of 11 teams from six universities - Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University (ECNU), Central China Normal University, Northeast Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University and Southwest University - of which competed for the title in a series of eight matches. The ECNU team was hastily put together one and half months before the beginning of the tournament, so it only consisted of 11 players from 10 countries, yet in the qualifier match against the team from Beijing Normal University, Dragonetti Carlo, a forward of the ECNU team, scored off a header to secure a 1-0 victory over the host-team. In the most dramatic and unfortunate fashion, however, he suffered torn ligaments in the match and was inactive for the remainder of the tournament. Coach Liu Yu was forced to make necessary tactical adjustments for the squad, although the setback of Carlo’s injury, didn’t stop them from a head-on win streak to flawless victory.

In recent years, ECNU’s international student-body has frequently won China’s university sporting events, for example, in 2014 and 2016 respectively, the squads defeated 32 teams to win the championship at the Shanghai Universities International Student Dragon Boat Race. ENCU will strive to continue this tradition in excellent international student sporting events, along with great coaches and full-fledged training programs and recruitment.
