Many Chinese university students took the opportunity to relax from school this summer, on the other hand nearly 500 teachers and students from 8 universities in China collaborated in a voluntary teaching program under the slogan: “Poverty alleviation through education, youth in action”. The 2-month program began on July 12 in Shangrao City of Jiangxi Province.
The volunteers were divided into 36 groups from East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, South China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai University of Engineering Science, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and Zhejiang Normal University. Each group comprised one or two teachers and around 10-15 students.
The volunteers will teach in Ningdu, Huichang, Yongfeng and Ganxian counties. On their journey, they travel to 36 impoverished villages where they plan to build a summer school in each place, visiting 100 rural families and aiding 100 students in poverty-stricken areas.
Each volunteer group is assigned classes according to their own specializations. For example, a group of students from the Faculty of Economics and Management of ECNU taught finance classes in a 12-day closed-door summer camp, 21 students from the School of Foreign Languages of ECNU taught Japanese, French, German, Russian and Spanish at Jiangkou Middle School in Ganxian County for more than one week. They also brought English books for the students, such as “Peter Pan”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, in addition to self-compiled teaching materials and software for English literature, drama and film classes.
According to the volunteer projects’ main organizer, this is an action taken by university students to fulfill their social responsibilities and contributions to the work of poverty alleviation and education development in lesser developed areas of China.
