3 July, ECNU signed a strategic partnership agreement with Huawei Technologies at the company's headquarters in Bantian of Longgang District, Shenzhen, for in-depth collaboration and co-operation on scientific research innovation, talent training and exchanges, campus construction of smart technologies and education informationization.
This is a big step forward for both parties, who have benefited from long-time co-operation in the fields of computer science and software engineering, information science and technology, and physics and materials science.

The offical agreement was signed by ECNU vice president Sun Zhenrong and general manager of Huawei Shanghai Hao Guoqiang, with Peng Bo, vice president of the Public and Government Affairs at Huawei, and ECNU president Qian Xuhong, serving as witnesses. More than 20 school heads of ECNU attended the ceremony, including academician He Jifeng, head of the Computer Science and Software Engineering School; Cheng Jing, chief of the personnel department of the ECNU CPC Committee; Wang Yan of ECNU Publishing House; Li Peng, chief of the International Cooperation Department of Huawei Shanghai Institute; Liu Gui, general manager of Enterprise Solutions Department of Huawei Shanghai; and Tong Liang, head of Education and Medical Care Department of Huawei Shanghai.

Prior to the signing ceremony, a seminar was held where ECNU president Qian Xuhong gave a detailed introduction on ECNU's strategy to build itself into a double first-class university in addition to the action plans put forth to develop and implement it. As a comprehensive research-oriented university, President Qian noted that ECNU willingly takes on the mission and responsibility of educating people while promoting civilization and development. Besides that, the university advocates for an innovation-driven education, upgrades to the level of scientific research within disciplines, and meeting demands for the implementation of China’s national strategies. Therefore, in an effort to provide for a harmonius society, ECNU has rolled out five action plans: Education Plus, Ecology Plus, Health Plus, Intelligence Plus and Internationalization Plus.

At the seminar, President Qian then updated the attendees on the university's latest research achievements in cognitive neuroscience, information science, optics and education; thereby ECNU and Huawei, with their respective advantageous resources, would pull together to realize the common vision for mutual co-operation in such fields.
Next, Huawei’s Peng Bo addressed the seminar about the company’s products, soultiond and leading role in ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Huawei has been committed to bringing the digital world to every person, home and organization, for a fully-connected world, said Peng Bo, while ECNU has supplied a large quantity of excellent talents to Huawei over the past years. In fact, he mentioned nearly 500 of Huawei employees had graduated from ECNU.
Moreover, Huawei has rendered support for ECNU's development in various ways, such as by scientific research and campus construction of smart technologies that, Peng Bo believes under the new ECNU-Huawei agreement, will play a bigger role in the cultivation of ECNU's campus construction and comprehensive talent pool via digital technologies: every teacher and student of ECNU, even of all universities in Shanghai, would benefit from the advancements of the digital era.

According to Peng Bo, ECNU and Huawei will partner-up in cutting-edge technologies by establishing a joint innovation lab and talent funding mechanism for research and development. For example, both parties are discussing a Trustworthy Innovation Lab to deepen its co-operation in combined learning with research and production based on the work of the Shanghai Key Lab of Trustworthy Computing, National Trusted Embedded Software Engineering Technology Research Center, and the National Joint Research Center of Trustworthy Software. Huawei will provide support for the Trustworthy Innovation Lab at ECNU in cloud computing and open-source software/hardware. In hopes to step up its commercialization on research results, both parties will also expand on co-operation and exchanges in information technology, data science and engineering, database systems and research on next-generation chip design.
Per the ECNU-Huawei strategic partnership, ECNU’s Innovative Talent Center of the Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy will be provided teachers, experimental equipment and cloud computing resources for the teaching of engineering practices by Huawei. The two sides will jointly offer professional and general courses for ECNU students in communication technology, Internet of Things (IoT), big data and artificial intelligence, and develop textbooks for the courses at which the progress and achievements of the two sides’s co-operation will be released at regular ICT and AI conferences held by Huawei.
Huawei’s advantageious position in research and campus construction of smart technologies will provide top-level design and infrastructure for the construction of an environmentally friendly, safe and digitized campus at ECNU. Huawei, which has invested vastly into building itself into a leading giant in terminal, network and cloud technologies, will also work in tandem with ECNU on constructions of its hybrid cloud platform, high-performance computing platform, campus digital platform, smart-campus and Huawei cloud. Hence, both parties plan to jointly set up a Smart Campus Innovation Lab at ECNU, which will focus on studies of the theory and technologies of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, 5G, the future network, IoT, and big data analysis. Through this partnership, they intend to explore innovative cooperation in the application of information technology in universities, college informationization and education innovation.

Building upon a education data platform, based in smart technologies for the Basic Education Group, the ECNU-Huawei agreement promotes information-sharing and exchange while supporting data-driven computational pedagogy research, whereby cloud or data analysis platforms, could be implemented through big data storage computing, data analysis and data visualization technologies, and research on the integration of computer science and AI education, as well as education and information technology.
After the ceremony, the ECNU delegation paid a visit to Huawei’s Noah's Ark Lab and the company's Bantian headquarters.
