STAGED at ECNU from July 15-July 20, the 2018 Youth Scientists' Camp was held in participation with 190 high school students and 19 teachers from 15 provinces including Hong Kong, Macao, Anhui, Sichuan, Tibet, Henan, Xinjiang and others. It was organized by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education.

Youth Scientists' Camp opening ceremony.
The Youth Scientists' Camp was divided into 3 branches of natural sciences: life sciences (biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology), material sciences (physics and chemistry), and earth sciences (earth and environmental science). ECNU's camp was spearheaded by the slogan Exciting Passion for the Future of Science.
This year's camp had a focus on all-round development for students, emphasizing more science popularity among young people, promoting cooperation between middle schools and universities in science education, and to cultivate students understanding of scientific and technological innovation.
After a first day of lectures and a well-received ice-breaking activity, the following two days consisted of learning and practice activities on the six disciplines of the life, material and earth sciences. Its unique characteristics allowed campers a closer look at the cutting-edge scientific research and technological advancements in those fields of study.

The chemistry team's theme understanding the material world with a good eye for chemistry was carried out under the guidance of the instructor of the school of chemistry and molecular engineering with 10 exceptional students.

The earth sciences crew was divided into two groups primarily based on hands-on experiments such as the pore of magmatic rocks, simulation and observations of solar eclipses and samples of water circulation activity.

The material sciences team was divided into 6 groups by more carefully planned experiments, including estimates of the spring stiffness coefficient and measuring instantaneous speed and acceleration of gravity; they also produced electric lamps, small magnetic trains, measured laser wavelengths and other projects with attention on operating capacity.
Campers visit the museum of biology.
The campers of biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology visited the museum of biology and the institute of biomedical research, and watched the experimenters operate with high-precision instruments. Subsequently the biochemistry and molecular biology group simulated a real crime investigation process - identifying the physiological characteristics of people through blood, fingerprints, DNA and other biological means - as a way to understand more about experimentation and situational awareness in crime scene investigation.
Scientific disciplines tutorials.
Students determine the physical and chemical indexes of water.
The environmental science group collected cherry river samples from ECNU, used relevant instruments to determine the physical and chemical indexes of water and conducted three experiments on water quality analysis in the laboratory -- extraction of chlorophyll a for water quality indicators, determination of total phosphorus for water quality indicators and determination of chlorophyll a for water quality indicators.
A tour of Shanghai's nature museum.

In addition to learning-based activities, ECNU also arranged a variety of cultural activities for the campers, including visiting the school's history museum, drama night, a tour of Shanghai's nature museum and other cultural and science activities. The campers were thus able to take in the cultural traditions of the university and further stimulate their enthusiasm for exploring science and technology.
The camp closes with an evening party.
The camp closed with an evening party held in the university student activity center on July 20. It was a relaxing time for all students - from 15 provinces and autonomous regions of China - to reflect on the times shared together throughout the duration of the camp. The campers gained genuine friendship through their shared love for science and technology, and successfully worked together, grew together and moved one step closer to becoming scientists of the future.
