ON 27 December, nearly 100 international students actively participated in an event organized by ECNU to spread the spirit of the 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress among ECNU’s international student body as well as help them keep abreast of China’s developmental trends in the modern era.

The congress, which convened in October of last year, was a crucial meeting to enhance China’s development of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Twenty-five international students with the International Chinese Culture School participated in the speech contest. It was presided over by Cai Xiaobin and Bi Meizhen. students of the Department of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.

The contestants delivered their own stories about China and expressed their sincere feelings and love for Chinese culture. Some of them shared their personal experiences in learning Mandarin-Chinese while others talked about their understanding of China’s rapidly developing infrastructure and dynamic features in recent years.

The first prizes went to five of them. Another eight won second prizes and 12 third prizes.

In a speech to close the competition, Tong Shijun, chairman of the University Council, said the competition rendered him a rare opportunity to listen to the voice of ECNU’s international students. Stressing that foreign student education is an essential part of ECNU’s drive to create a world-class university, he promised that the university will make greater efforts to assist international students in naturally embellishing the ideas of Chinese culture in tune with China’s overall strategy and development.
