ECNU Wins Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner Award

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute. The 9th Confucius Institute Conference, under the theme “Embrace the New Decade of Confucius Institute”, was held in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Principals and administrators from 475 Confucius Institutes and 851 Confucius Classrooms, in 126 countries and regions, attended the conference and conducted thorough discussions on the achievements and experiences of Confucius Institutes in the past 10 years in order to explore future development in the coming decade.  

The 9th Confucius Institute Conference is held in Xiamen.  

At the opening ceremony of the conference, Vice-Premier Liu Yandong, chair of the Council of Confucius Institute Headquarters, made a keynote speech and presented awards to 80 outstanding collectives and individuals. ECNU won the award for “Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner”. On behalf of the university, Chen Qun, President of ECNU, accepted the award from Madam Liu.

To further promote the construction of Confucius Institutes, Hanban, the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, set up the “Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner” award in 2012. This year, 10 institutions and universities, including ECNU, Xiamen University, the Provincial Education Department of Jiangsu Province, and the Provincial Education Department of Hunan Province, won the award. It was in 2012 that ECNU won the award for the first time.

“Ten years makes a mere start in life.” This famous saying inThe Book of Riteswas quoted by Madam Liu to say that the past decade had put Confucius Institutes on a sound footing. To open up wider development space for Confucius Institutes, she put forward four expectations for Confucius Institutes: speed up localization for integration development, work incessantly on quality improvement and fundamental development, expand on people-to-people exchange functions to facilitate diversification, and innovate operational modes for sustainable development.  

Confucius Institutes are nonprofit organizations aiming to promote the Chinese language and culture. The Confucius Institute program began in 2004. At present, Confucius Institutes have more than 3.45 million registered students worldwide. Chinese-language teaching has been incorporated into the national education system in more than 80 countries.  

Delegation of the Confucius Institutes at the Unviersity of Basel hold a council meeting during the conference.  

During the conference, Ren Youqun, Vice President & Vice Chairman of the University Council of ECNU, met with principals of Confucius Institutes from Chicago, Tulane University, and the University of Turin, as well as other high-ranking administrators of these organizations. At the conference’s President’s Forum, Ren made a keynote speech about the quality of directors and teachers of Confucius Institutes.  

ECNU is one of the Chinese universities that first began establishing Confucius Institutes with foreign universities and institutions. So far, the University has set up 8 Confucius Institutes around the world.
