Postdoctoral research station for marine sciences and fine arts forms at ECNU

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China, along with the National Postdoctoral Management Committee, approved the establishment of 339 new postdoctoral research stations to go into effect nationally this October. ECNU was approved to set up two new postdoctoral research stations—“Marine Sciences” and “Arts”.

Beginning in 1985, ECNU became one of the first units in China to recruit post-doctoral studentsthrough successful postdoctoral research stations. ECNU now has a total of 26 post-doctoral research stations in the first-level disciplines, of which 90% of the first-level disciplines were authorized for doctoral degrees. There are more than 450 post-doctoral students at ECNU. In the past three years, over 130 people were admitted into postdoctoral stations per year with a significant year-on-year increase.

ECNU’s Marine Sciences is characterized by estuary coastal sciences. For more than half a century, ECNU has established the Estuarine Research Institute, the Estuarine Coastal Research Institute, the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine Coastal Research, the Estuarine Coastal Science Research Institute and the College of Marine Sciences. The discipline of marine sciences has historically engaged with land-sea interactions, dynamic sedimentary geomorphology processes, estuary coasts and ecological, environmental as well as biogeochemical processes of adjacent seas, while more contemporary subjects include physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, and marine geology.

The Art Department of ECNU stemmed from the Department of Art Education founded in 1981. In 2004, it was promoted to the School of Art in which another independent art institute was established in 2009. The College of Fine Arts at ECNU was finally set up in 2016. Through 35 years of establishment and development, based on the long-term academic accumulation, the College of Fine Arts has formed its own distinctive features while displaying advantages in the fields of art history, art archaeology, art theory, art criticism, art education and aesthetic education.
