ECNU delays start of spring semester

2020-02-05

East China Normal University (ECNU) will not start its spring semester this month, according to a noticeissued by the university today.

Based on the university calendar, the spring semester was originally set for February 24. Now, with the spreading of the epidemic, ECNU has to delay the start of the new semester. The exact start date is yet to be announced.

The notice is a response to the requirement made by the local authority. At a news press held this morning, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission required that all universities and schools in the city should not start the spring semester this month. The commission will specify the opening dates according to the condition of the novel coronavirus.

At the meeting held at ECNU on February 4 for novel coronavirus prevention, the university said that online courses and lectures would be provided for students who could not return to the university for the spring semester due to the epidemic.

The university will make full use of its quality open online courses and laboratory resource platforms to organize online education activities. These courses and activities will benefit students unable to return to the university for education due to the virus.

The safety and health of all ECNUers are the top concerns of the university. There are about 500 students staying on both campuses. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the university has been monitoring the ongoing situation closely and taking proactive steps to safeguard the well-being of its students and faculty/staff members.

ECNU officials headed by Mei Bing, Chair of the University Council, and Qian Xuhong, the university president, inspect the novel coronavirus control work on campus.

ECNU takes strict measures to contain the spread of the virus, such as managing the entry into the campuses, banning on-campus group events, disinfecting public facilities, keeping daily heath records of those staying on campus, and closing down the stadiums, libraries and some of the canteens. For safety reasons, the canteen still in service provides only box meals.

In addition, to get all ECNUers informed, the university has posted relevant information, as well as tips on how to contain the coronavirus, on its official websites and WeChat/Weibo/Facebook/Twitter accounts. Text messages are also sent for notification.
