In response to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s call for the victory against poverty, the National Language Promotion Base at ECNU has discovered a new path to rapidly improve the proficiency of standard spoken and written Chinese of teachers in minority areas, a unique ECNU mode characterized by solving problems in teacher training through online learning. From May to August this year, the ECNU Base had participated in an online demonstration and training project to improve teachers’ ability to teach with the national commonly-used language in 52 poverty-stricken counties, and from June to July it had organized an online demonstration and training project to improve the Mandarin of seeded teachers from kindergartens in the ‘three districts and three prefectures' of extreme poverty. The proposal titled Innovative Research and Practice of National Commonly-Used Language Training Model for Teachers in Minority Areas submitted by the National Language Promotion Base of ECNU was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the first major projects of national language promotion base construction in 2020 (Among the 61 projects approved, only 4 were major projects).
