18 universities join forces for effective global communication

On the morning of September 27, Tsinghua University hosted the sub-forum entitled “International Communication of University Image” of the 7th Seminar on International Communication in Tianjin Auditorium. More than 50 experts and scholars from 18 universities across the country and other stakeholders involved in international communication work participated in the forum.

Chen Xueliang, deputy director of the International Communication Bureau of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, Xu Yongji, deputy director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department of the Ministry of Education and executive deputy director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs attended this sub-forum.

Xiang Botao, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, delivered an opening speech. He pointed out that international communication capacity building has become an increasingly significant task, in which image serves as an indispensable part. As one of the sub-forums of the 7th Seminar on International Communication this year, the establishment of the sub-forum of “International Communication of University Image” aims to exchange practical experiences and the latest research results, discuss the future direction and key tasks of university’s international communication, explore how to further construct the discourse and narrative system of Chinese universities and how to shape the international image of Chinese universities in the new development stage. We will continuously enhance the influence of international communication of Chinese universities and serve China’s international communication capacity building with the guidance of the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech on May 31.

Yu Yunquan, president of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies of the Chinese Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, talked about the report, “Excellent Cases of University International Communication” released this year, and the cases of eight universities that stood out, namely of Peking University (The “Inward” and “Outward” directions of the International Communication in Colleges and Universities-Take the Video Brand of Peking University ‘PKU Minutes’ as an Example), Tsinghua University(By virtue of International Social Media to shape the Overseas Image of Universities-Take Tsinghua University's “Connecting Tsinghua” Global Online Interactive Campaign as an Example), Beihang University (The World-Record-Setting Moon Palace 365 Experiment Elicited Great Repercussions at Home and Abroad), Tianjin University (Facebook Platform Operation and Strategy Analysis of Colleges and Universities-Take Facebook Homepage Operation of Tianjin University as an Example), Shanghai Jiaotong University (Exploration and Practice of International Communication of Global Jiaotong University Based on Video Expression), Shanghai International Studies University (Tell Chinese Stories in Multiple Languages and Make China’s Voice Heard in All Media-The Multi-language Website of Shanghai International Studies University Enhances International Communication Capacity), Zhejiang University (Show A Global Responsible Image with Full Matrix Communication-Take Zhejiang University to Carry out International Communication with a Focus on Sustainable Development as an Example) and China Academy of Art (Carry Forward Chinese Spirit in the Great Pattern of World Art: A Case Study of Overseas Communication Platform Construction of China Academy of Art). The award-winning cases from those universities started from their respective advantages, characteristics and experiences to explain many vivid stories of university international communication.

Yi Yonggang, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and director of the Publicity Department of Shanghai International Studies University, Li Jianwei, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and director of the Publicity Department of Beihang University, Luo Ling, deputy director of Integrated Media Center and director of Overseas Communication Office of Peking University, Lyu Jing, director of Publicity Department of Tianjin University Party Committee, and Xu Yuan, deputy director of Publicity Department of China Academy of Art, respectively shared the international communication cases of universities.

Later on, Professor Zhou Qing’an, assistant dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, shared academic topics on story narration and value construction in the international communication of higher education.

Professor Zhang Hongzhong, executive dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Beijing Normal University, shared academic topics on the application of artificial intelligence technology in the building of international communication capacity.

In the open dialogue session, Guo Tai, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Director of Publicity Department of Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Hu Hao, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and director of Publicity Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Hu Yanhua, executive deputy director of the CPC Publicity Department of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Li Min, director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department of Zhejiang University, Zhang Zhuo, director of International Cooperation Department of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Gui Ling, deputy director of International Exchange Department of Wuhan University, and Chen Ken, director of Global Communication Office of Tsinghua University, spoke in turn, sharing their working experience and feelings in international communication based on the specific practice of international communication of universities.

Zhong Xin, professor of the School of Journalism of Renmin University of China and assistant dean of the Institute of Public Diplomacy Studies, affirmed the active exploration and practice of international communication by domestic universities, and shared the latest research on international communication with the theme of Connection and Interaction: International Communication Strategies of Colleges and Universities in the Social Era.

The forum issued the Tianjin Initiative of Improving International Communication of Universities.

Qin Chuan, administrative vice director of the CPC Publicity Department of Tsinghua University, Ma Changhong, deputy director of the CPC Publicity Department of Nankai University, deputy director of the News Center and associate dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Liu Yuhan, deputy director of the News Center of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Sun Weiwei, deputy director of the CPC Publicity Department of Beijing Normal University, Zhang Xiaomeng, deputy director of the International Exchange Department of Renmin University of China, and Meng Linqian, deputy director of the International Department of Dalian University of Technology, read out the full text of the initiative on behalf of 18 universities present. They proposed the following initiative to peer colleges and universities in China:

Connect China and foreign countries, communicate with the world and improve the international communication work pattern of universities.

Take the initiative to plan, tell stories well, and build a discourse system of university international communication.

Share and integrate, conduct mutual benefit and learning, expand the partnership network of university international communication.

Accurate communication, improve quality and efficiency, and optimize the means of expression of university international communication.

Make overall plans and coordination, build a good team, and consolidate the foundation of university international communication.

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, with the theme of “Embark on a New Journey of International Communication in the New Era”, this Seminar on International Communication aims to provide theoretical support for innovating the theory and practice of international communication and constructing a new pattern of international communication in the new era through theoretical discussion on the current and future problems facing international communication. The Seminar, as the most authoritative and influential high-end theory seminar in the field of international communication in China, has been successfully held for six sessions since 2009. The seminar launched the sub-forum, “International Communication of University Image” this year for the first time. Hosted by Tsinghua University, the sub-forum attracted extensive attention and participation from the academic circle, industries and political circle, and provided an important opportunity and exchange platform for promoting the international communication with universities as the subject.
