ECNU congratulates NYU Shanghai on its move to New Bund campus

11/04/2022

After over three years of anticipation, the NYU Shanghai New Bund campus has finally been unveiled for the 2023 spring semester. On the afternoon of February 27th, a delegation led by Mei Bing, Chair of the University Council, went to the new campus to present an oil painting to congratulate NYU Shanghai on its new journey.

The painting is based on a photograph taken at the groundbreaking ceremony of NYU Shanghai on March 28th, 2011, and took over three months to prepare, said Chen Mingyuan, a young lecturer from the College of Fine Arts at ECNU. The oil painting depicts the scene of the foundation of NYU Shanghai and commemorates the historic moment of its establishment through drawing and presentation.

In her speech, Mei Bing pointed out that in 2012, ECNU and NYU collaborated to establish NYU Shanghai, which began a pathway to gathering talent. After ten years of tremendous development, NYU Shanghai has reached a new "groundbreaking moment". On this new journey, ECNU will give NYU Shanghai even better and stronger support. "We are convinced that the next decade will be even more brilliant and will make important contributions to the development of Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China and the world as a whole."

NYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen delivered speeches expressing their sincere gratitude to ECNU for this precious gift. The oil painting will be displayed in the most prominent spot in the new NYU Shanghai campus. They unanimously said that ECNU and NYU Shanghai are natural partners and that every achievement made by NYU Shanghai has been gained with the full and constant support of ECNU.

Founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the district of Pudong, NYU Shanghai is China's first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network. On August 12th, 2013, NYU Shanghai's first undergraduates’ admission ceremony was held at ECNU and they spent their first academic year on the campus of ECNU. 2014 witnessed NYU Shanghai’s move into its academic building on Century Avenue.

On May 30th, 2019, NYU Shanghai officially started the construction on New Bund Campus. The new campus has a floor area of approximately 115,000 square meters, nearly twice the floor area of the current academic building on Century Avenue. The new campus houses many new facilities to support the academic, social, and cultural growth of the community, including a 200-seat performing arts recital hall, a black box theater, two indoor gymnasiums equipped to host basketball, volleyball and badminton games, and a two-story reading room adjacent to the library.

With a capacity of up to 4,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, the new campus will not only become the academic hub of NYU Shanghai, but also a cultural landmark of New Bund community.
