12/27/2024

On November 28th, 2024, the China Association for Science and Technology announced the "Selected Projects in Phase II of the Excellence Action Plan of China’s Scientific and Technical Journals". The first English journal in the field of Anthropocene in China, Anthropocene Coasts, hosted by East China Normal University, has been successfully selected for the "High-Starting Point Journal in Phase II of the Excellence Action Plan of China’s Scientific and Technical Journals".

The "Excellence Action Plan of China’s Scientific and Technical Journals" is jointly implemented by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the National Press and Publication Administration, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. After open application, qualification review, presentation and defense, expert committee review, and publication of results, a total of 463 projects have been determined and announced as the selected projects for Phase II of the Excellence Action Plan of China’s Scientific and Technical Journals. A total of 207 Journals entered the defense meeting evaluation phase for the High-Starting Point Journal Project, with 50 Journals being selected. This project is known as the “national team” selection of the best journals.

Our university's scientific journals closely align with the institution's major research initiatives, creating a strong synergy. Estuarine and coastal studies is a traditional strength of our university, which houses the “State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research.” It leads the United Nations' “Decade of Ocean Science” Mega-Delta Programme, titled “Deltas associated with large rivers: seeking solutions to the problem of sustainability (2021-2030)”, exerting broad influence both domestically and internationally. Leveraging this platform, Anthropocene Coasts was officially launched in 2018. It is hosted by East China Normal University, operated by the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, and co-published with Springer Nature."

The journal aims for "green, sustainable, and high-quality development of coasts" and is characterized by the integration of multidisciplinary approaches. By the end of 2024, seven volumes (Volumes and issues | Anthropocene Coasts) had been published. By publishing original, cutting-edge, and leading research, it serves the “Strategy for a Strong Maritime State” and enhances the international impact of Chinese achievements. The journal achieves a close alignment and mutual promotion with significant scientific research initiatives, aiding our university in establishing itself as an international hub for estuarine and coastal scientific research.

Anthropocene Coasts has been indexed by ESCI and Scopus since 2020, and was selected as a 'High-Starting Point Journal' in Phase II of the 'Excellence Action Plan for China’s Scientific and Technical Journals' in 2024, and received its first international project funding that same year.

The successful selection of Anthropocene Coasts is a major breakthrough for our university in the strategic forefront field of Estuarine and Coastal Research in the first-class discipline strategy, deploying a high-level English scientific journal. The journal will fully leverage the university's discipline strength, international influence, and publishing capabilities in Estuarine and Coastal Research, promote interdisciplinary integration, endeavor to create a global first-class academic exchange and display platform, promote the growth of the Anthropocene Coastal Disciplines field, and make significant contributions to the comprehensive construction of a strong maritime nation.
