On September 16, 2021, the signing ceremony of a comprehensive strategic partnership between East China Normal University (ECNU) and City University of Macau (CityU) was held in the Yifu Building of ECNU. Qian Xuhong, President of ECNU, and Liu Jun, President of City University of Macau, signed the agreement on behalf of the two universities.

After the signing ceremony, President Qian Xuhong and President Liu Jun held a friendly discussion. Qian Xuhong, on behalf of ECNU, first welcomed the visit of President Liu Jun, and then introduced the university’s “Flower of Happiness” program, saying that the university adopts the five action plans of “Education+”, “Ecology+”, “Health+”, “Internationalization+”, and “AI+” to integrate the related disciplines of education, humanity, psychology, computer science, artificial intelligence, software, and big data, enable them to support each other, and accelerate the university’s double first-class construction. While making effort for development, ECNU also focuses on carrying out its social responsibility and missions, in an effort to serve the national strategy, and actively engage in the country’s “Belt & Road” initiative construction and in-depth cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
President Liu Jun introduced the status of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and looked forward to cooperation between the two universities in teaching Chinese as an international language, education, finance, and general health based on the discipline characteristics of CityU. He also expressed his expectations for cooperation between the two universities in the field of international Chinese education in Portuguese-speaking countries in the “Belt & Road” program. ECNU Vice Presidents Zhou Aoying and Gu Hongliang put forward their suggestions on cooperation between the two universities in joint cultivation of doctoral students, the cross-disciplinary integration of new liberal arts and information technology, sports health and psychology, as well as the implementation of follow-up cooperation projects.

ECNU and CityU initiated their cooperation from December 2019. They signed the “Memorandum of Cooperation” and the “Agreement on Co-construction of Ministry of Education Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Science in Universities”, and co-constructed the Education Development Institute. Since the new student exchange agreement was signed in July 2020, students from both universities have participated in the exchange programs each semester. The signing of this comprehensive strategic partnership agreement will usher in a new chapter of cooperation between the two universities. In the future, both parties will continue to integrate themselves into the national development schemes, give full play to their respective regional and disciplinary advantages, and fully cooperate in talent cultivation, scientific research, and school-running, so as to promote the development of education both in Shanghai and Macao.
