The online opening ceremony for the “Seminar of Comprehensive Measures for Rural School Teachers from Developing Countries” was held on April 9, 2021. Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and organized by the International Center for Teacher Education of the Faculty of Education of East China Normal University (ECNU), the event was held successfully at the Zhongbei Campus of ECNU in Shanghai, China.
Officials and scholars who attended the opening ceremony include Mr. Chen Runyun, Vice President of the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), Mr. Ha Yu, Director of Program Management Division I of the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and Ms. Liu Beimin, Director of the Department of Foreign Economic Cooperation of the Commission of Commerce of Shanghai Municipality, together with Mr. Berhanu Moreda, Director-General of the Department of Teacher and Education Leaders of the Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Ms. Bereda Samrawit Kibatu, Advisor of the Bureau of Education of Addis Ababa City of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Professor Li Zhibin, Vice President of ECNU, Professor Xun Yuan, Executive Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education of ECNU and Ms. Jin Lijun, Deputy Director of the Global Education Center of ECNU also attended the opening ceremony. Associate Professor Peng Liping, Director of the International Center for Teacher Education of ECNU, presided over the opening ceremony.

62 teachers from 6 countries in Asia, Africa and North America attended the seminar.

Mr. Chen Runyun pointed out that teachers in rural areas have played an important role in the development of education in China, which is of strategic significance for national education development and social progress. He hoped that the online presentations, discussions and cloud visits arranged for this seminar will not be undermined by distance or the Covid-19 pandemic. And he extended his warm welcome to all the participants and wished that they could come to China for face-to-face discussions and field visits when the pandemic is over.

Mr. Berhanu Moreda stressed that ECNU has offered many opportunities for Ethiopian educators. “His Excellency, Mr. Mohammed Ahmedin Hassen, State Minister for Basic Education in Ethiopia and alumnus of the International Center for Teacher Education of ECNU, has set a good example for us.” He also expressed his wish that such cooperation could be continued so that more teachers and education leaders in Ethiopia could participate in similar seminars, share experience and establish future collaboration.

Professor Li Zhibin said that ECNU would like to further connect with the international education community, strengthen exchanges and cooperation with developing countries, achieve common progress through joint effort and make contributions to the development of international education.

Ms. Bereda Samrawit Kibatu and Professor David Raigada of Universidad Nacional Costa Ricahave also delivered a speech respectively on behalf of the participants of the seminar. Ms. Bereda Samrawit Kibatu, an alumna of the International Center for Teacher Education of ECNU graduating with a Master’s degree in education policy and leadership in July, 2020, is a beneficiary of the China-Aid program of the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC. She believes that this seminar will make vital contributions to the educational development in Ethiopia, and that all participants will learn relevant strategies for education reform and development from China. Professor David Raigada said, “As an educator, we are preparing today’s young people for their future success as well as for challenges posed by policy and education system changes. I hope this seminar will help us achieve this target.”

The “Seminar on Comprehensive Measures for Rural Teachers from Developing Countries” is the first online short-term China-Aid training program held in Shanghai that is sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC and organized by the International Center for Teacher Education of ECNU in 2021. Participants of the seminar totals 62 from six countries in Asia, Africa and Central America, including Costa Rica, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Myanmar.
In the following three weeks, the participants will discuss with Chinese and foreign experts and scholars a large variety of issues. They include China’s development and transformation, education for poverty alleviation in China under the Framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, policy reform for teacher development in rural areas of China, education policy in China, traditional Chinese culture and education philosophy, professional development of principals in China, global education agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, setting the Education Agenda Sustainable Development for All, updating equity and quality in QAF & EMIS for Education Agenda 2030, mathematics education in China, basic education reform and development in Shanghai, big data and the application of ICT in education, education and rural development: new missions for TVET in China, learning achievement assessment and quality assurance framework, university governance in China, higher education development in Asian and developing countries, China’s experience in combating COVID-19, education policy and planning, etc. Cloud visits to elementary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools are arranged for participants’ to further understand the present situation and practice in China.
