ECNU president and academician Qian Xuhong was invited to attend the 1st World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF) held in Beijing from Oct. 16-17. At a high-level dialogue for university presidents, heads of international science organizations and entrepreneurs, president Qian made his appearance and delivered a keynote address at one of the event’s sub-forums, Science and Technology & Education Culture.

The dialogue brought together scholars and entrepreneurs from China and abroad to discuss a wide-range of topics such as scientific development, technological innovation and human civilization.
On the discussion of international talent training and equal opportunities for development, Qian stressed that only when education reaches a level of thinking and spirit can people actively think about other problems; the ability of multiplying people can change themselves and even the world. In terms of international talent training, students can participate in international scientific research cooperation, which can foster a growth of talents at a much faster rate.
At the sub-forum on the afternoon of October 16, president Qian delivered his keynote speech, "The path and method of training young scientists-an ECNU solution". He cited several cases of training ECNU’s young scientists, through which he shared his understanding of contemporary scientific spirit. In his view, this type of scientific spirit contains three aspects: criticism, openness and creativeness.

Sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and jointly initiated by the Russian Union of Scientific and Engineering Associations (USEA), the 1st World Science and Technology Development Forum was attended by more than 400 participants composed of experts, Nobel Prize winners, university presidents, academicians and entrepreneurs from 18 countries and regions. The forum aims to build a high-level global platform that facilitates development in science and technology, cooperation and exchanges.
