2-5 July, more than 300 Chinese philosophical researchers from all over the world gathered at the University of Bern for the 21st International Conference of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy (ISCP). Held in Bern, Switzerland, the theme for this year’s event was “Reality, Argumentation, and Persuasion: Metaphysical Explorations and Epistemological Engagements In Chinese Philosophy”.
Importantly, Professor Yang Guorong from the Department of Philosophy of East China Normal University was elected president of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy at the closing ceremony held on July 5th whereby professor Richard King, president of the University of Bern, transferred the banner of the ISCP to its new president, Professor Yang Guorong.

Yang Guorong pointed out that the development of world philosophy needs to transcend the philosophical tradition by allowing Chinese philosophy to thrive, with the universal significance of Chinese philosophy highlighting the unique ideological value of Chinese philosophy in solving philosophical problems. Moreover, theories to be applied to the construction of modern Chinese philosophy should demonstrate the creativeness and theoretical significance of Chinese philosophy.

Founded in 1975, by Professor Cheng Zhongying at the University of Hawaii, the ISCP aims to unite scholars from all over the globe who are interested in promoting Chinese philosophy research throughout the whole international academic community.
Since 1978, the International Chinese Philosophy Institute has held an international conference every two years, in which it has been held 21 times throughout universities in the United States, Europe and Asia. This has greatly increased attention to the worldwide research on Chinese philosophy.
