August 5-8, the 4th National Crypto-Math Challenge Finals were held in Yantai University, Shandong Province. Zhao Xiaopeng, Qian Jiawei and Liu Zhusen of the School of Software Engineering made up the ECNU team that won the first prize. Their instructors, Cao Zhenfu and Dong Xiaolei, received the Outstanding Instructor Award.
ECNU students win first prize of the National Crypto-Math Challenge Finals.
The competition consisted of 253 teams, with more than 700 people, and from more than 70 universities in the six major regions of the country. In the form of submitting reports, the preliminary game allows the contestants to use tools to solve mathematical problems, generate results by adopting the theory and obtaining results from the experiment. After nearly one month of review and discussion, the judicial panel selected 52 teams to be selected for the national finals. The panel comprised members from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Central South University, Information Engineering University, and other scientific research institutions and universities. ECNU’s team entered the finals holding second place among national contestants and the first place in the East China Division of the preliminary competition.

The competition structure of the finals was slightly different from the preliminary competition in that it involves optimizing the report from the preliminary round and conducting PPT defense within the prescribed time. According to this format, the more innovative the method, the more accurate the results of the solution, and therefore the more rigorous the proof of the theoretical basis; this not only tests the searching ability of the players, but also tests their abilities to provide proof.
The basic combination of algebra theorem, the ability of the hands-on experiment with coding, and the ability to reply and display results within a limited time-frame is at the forefront of this competition.
