01/19/2019

During the 43rd Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)- International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) held on January 14, a team of three ECNU undergraduates outperformed nearly 1,000 opponents to advance into the 2019 World Finals of the global intercollegiate event.

The executive director of ACM-ICPC Asia announced the following winners from the School of Computer Science and Sofware Engineering: Zhang Yuge, Lin Fangxin and Zhou Yiran. Cultivating them through the contest were their instructors Xiao Chunyun and Du Yugen.

The World Finals will be held from March 31-April 5 in Porto, Portugal, where over 100 teams from top-notch global universities are to compete for top prizes, including 17 from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.

ECNU undergraduate team advance into 2019 ACM-ICPC World Finals.

As the premier global programming competition for the world’s top universities, it fosters individual creativity, teamwork spirit, innovation and design of software programs, and enables students to test their abilities to solve problems while performing under strict guidelines and pressure.

It is also the oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world since it’s been running for more than four decades. Split into two parts at the national and global levels, the competition seeks out top performers who have aspired to be the best of their generation of the world’s problem solvers in computing sciences and engineering.

The contest operates autonomous regional contests covering six continents culminating in a World Finals at the global level every year. Now in its 43rd year on the Chinese Mainland, the contests were held at the Asia regional competitions in Nanjing, Xuzhou, Qingdao, Shenyang, Jiaozuo, Beijing and Xi'an in January.

The contest format calls for teams made up of three students each to tackle eight or more complex, realistic problems whereby the students are given a computer and a problem statement, and are thus required to create a solution within a five-hour time limit. They are then evaluated by critera based on amount of problems solved, number of attempts and cumulative time - a winner is declared by most problems solved, least number of attempts and lowest time accomplished.

The three ECNU undergraduates win the gold medal in Xuzhou.

The 43rd ACM-ICPC had significant results due to the seven ECNU teams - totaling 21 undergraduates from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering - who earned four golds, six silvers and four bronzes in the regional competitions, the best results ever performed in the contest by an ECNU team.

The three ECNU undergraduates win championship in Qingdao.

Zhang Yuge, Lin Fangxin and Zhou Yiran were crowned in the Qinhuangdao competition of the 2018 China Collegiate Programming Contest organized by the China Collegiate Programming Contest Association, making history in the event as the first team of the university to win first place in the inter-collegiate contest.
