ON 13 August, the 2018 Study China Programme kicked off its summer travel campaign at East China Normal University comprising 220 university students from Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Nottingham, Manchester and other prestigious universities in England.The programme is funded by the British government and co-organized by ECNU and the University of Manchester.

It has entered its 10th year since the first group of 223 British undergraduates came to China to experience Shanghai and Hangzhou's - zero distance - traditional charm, culture and its economic and urban development.

During the decade, a total of 1515 college students from all over the UK came to ECNU through the government-funded program, and nearly 400 Chinese students of ECNU participated in cross-cultural and academic exchanges with their British counterparts whom will study Chinese, calligraphy, tai chi, Chinese history and other cultural courses on ECNU campus during their three-week study.

They also have the opportunity to visit Shanghai museums, the Bund and engage with Chinese families, in addition to a special visit to see the various tourist attractions in Hangzhou.

Huang Meixu, Director of the International Education Center at ECNU, said she is glad to see that many British students have come to China for study and work. She believes that the Study China Programme will help young people from China and Britain to get to know each other by developing mutual understanding and friendship.

Charloffe, a British college student whose Chinese name is Xia Yuan, has been studying Chinese in the UK for two years and had previously traveled to Beijing, although this is her first visit to Shanghai. Besides her love for the language and characters, she hopes to learn more about Chinese customs and develop a thorough understanding of life and culture in China, which she feels that students in the UK are also interested in China andChinese language for these reasons.
