The newly released Nature Index 2017 showed ECNU’s chemistry moved up a few spots to be placed 69th among global research institutions, 60th among universities around the world, and 18th among Chinese universities, after it broke into a global top 100 for the first time in the previous year.

According to the index compiled by the Nature Publishing Group, the university came at No. 21 among universities in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) in terms of overall strength, No. 20 among on the mainland, No. 43 in Asia Pacific, and No. 142 worldwide.
Domestically ECNU was rated 19th in earth and environment science, 22nd in life science, and 40th in physics.
The index tallied worldwide institutions according to the number and quality of research publications from December 1, 2015 to November 30, 2016, in 68 of the leading natural science journals in the world, by a metric called weighted fractional count (WFC).
ECNU maintains momentum in Nature Index ranking.
Making debut in November 2014, the Nature Index provides an indicator of patterns of high-quality research output across the globe. It uses a database that tracks the authors and their affiliations from about 60,000 quality research papers published in 68 top-ranking natural science journals such as Nature, Science and Cell each year from 20,000 leading research institutes and universities worldwide. The 68 journals, in the field of chemistry, earth and environment science, life science and physics, were selected by two independent panels of active scientists. The Nature Publishing Group estimates that these 68 journals account for about 30 per cent of total citations to natural science journals.
