A senior official of the United Nations was invited to attend the “UN Day” activities launched by ECNU in early June to acquaint teachers and students with the irreplaceable role of the intergovernmental organization in boosting international cooperation and exchanges in economic, science and culture.




Jiang pays a visit to a “UN Day” photo exhibition.
Jiang Hua, director of the News and Media Division of the UN Department of Public Information, met with ECNU president Chen Qun in the Global Center for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages at the Zhongbei Campus on June 2.
After the meeting, Jiang paid a visit to the “UN Day” photo exhibition. She valued highly the close cooperation between the university and international bodies such as UNESCO and World Bank as well as the performances from ECNU interns working at her division. She said it was an honor for her division to work together with ECNU on many projects, including the internship program, online translation and app development.
The “UN Day” event consisted of a photo exhibition, a face-to-face meeting with Mrs. Jiang and a lecture by Jiang. The photo exhibition comprised of two parts – “ECNU and UN”, which displayed exchanges and cooperation between ECNU and UN agencies, and “UN at ECNU”, which showcased the university's achievements in promoting the Chinese language worldwide and the life of international students studying in the university.

During a meeting with 50 student representatives from the School of Foreign Languages and School of Communication, Jiang shared her work experiences as a former deputy spokeswoman for former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and as an officer on peacekeeping mission.


Jiang makes a speech titled “I was a spokeswoman in UN” at Yifu Building.
She elaborated on the topic in a speech delivered to hundreds of teachers and students the next day. In the speech titled “I was a spokeswoman in the UN”, she reminisced in details about the whole story of how she joined the UN and the twists and turns when she worked as a member of the UN peacekeeping forces.
Jiang, who used to a BBC world news chief editor, began to work in UN in 2002 as deputy spokeswoman for Annan and took up the post as director of the Public Information Department on the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo in 2004. In 2008, she returned to the UN headquarters to lead the news and media division, working together with partners in the media worldwide to raise awareness of the UN’s goals and highlight its successes. Also a senior media adviser of the UN Burma Envoy Office, she was dispatched on a peacekeeping mission in Sudan in 2010 and South Sudan in 2011. In 2011, she assumed the office of a senior communication adviser in Libya on a four-month term.
