A Ph. D. student of ECNU set a record after winning a top prize in a highly-recognized international competition of computer science and software engineering.

Su Ting wins a gold prize at the ACM Student Research Competition.

Su Ting from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering was awarded the gold prize on May 18 in the category of postgraduate students at the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Student Research Competition (SRC) during the 2016 International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) held in Austin, the United States.

He became the first college student from the Chinese mainland to win the honor.

Su delivers a speech during the competition.

Su designs FSMdroid, a tool to detect loopholes of Android apps.

The ACM SRC, which is sponsored by Microsoft Research and held annually at well-known international academic conferences, such as ICSE¡¢FSE and OPSALA, offers a unique forum for undergraduate and graduate students to present their original research before a panel of judges and attendees.

The competition consists of three parts: research abstract submission, poster presentation, and research talk. Su Ting stood out from 37 contestants from the University of Notre Dame of the United States, the North Carolina State University of the United States, the University of London, and China's Tsinghua University to get the first prize.

In his paper, titled FSMdroid: Guided GUI Testing of Android Apps, Su proposed creatively an automatic testing technology for Android apps. The FSMdroid, developed by Su and his team members, can automatically conduct a thorough test of Android apps. So far, Su has used the tool to detect more than 10 loopholes of Android apps, which have been recognized and fixed by  app developers.

Su will participate in the ACM Student Research Competition Grand Finals to compete with winners of all SRCs held during the calendar year.

Su studied under He Jifeng, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Pu Geguang. Su has had many academic papers released at well-known international conferences, such as ICSE and PLDI, and won the title of Excellent Young Student from the ECNU School of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

One of the largest annual software engineering conferences, ICSE provides a forum for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, experiences and concerns in the field of software engineering. The annual conference has an A' rating from the China Computer Federation.
