Twenty-five participants of the UNESCO-China (The Great Wall) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Program -- ECNU Advanced Training Program attended the award ceremony of the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education as well as an international girls' and women's education seminar in Beijing from June 5 to 6.

Three representatives from ECNU International Center for Teacher Education, including the center's director Peng Liping and two other teachers, also attended the ceremony, which was held at the Great Hall of the People on June 6.
At the ceremony, Peng Liyuan, Chinese President Xi Jinping's wife and a special envoy of the UNESCO for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women's Education, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Education Tang Qian, and Chinese Minister of Education Yuan Guiren addressed a packed auditorium of representatives from the diplomatic corps in China, international organizations' delegations in China, the international girls' and women's education seminar, and Beijing universities, among other guests.
Hao Ping, Chinese Vice Minister of Education and Chairperson of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, presided over the ceremony.

At the ceremony, the 25 participants of the ECNU program performed an African dance “The Earth Mother”. After the ceremony, they took part in the international girls' and women's education seminar co-organized by the UNESCO and the Education Development Research Center of the Chinese Ministry of Education.
The seminar attendees discussed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development committed to providing inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels, and the important roles of girls' and women's education under the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Education 2030 Framework for Action.
The seminar enabled a dialogue on girls' and women's education as the world is facing challenges in the pursuit of gender equality in education, covering an array of issues such as education policies for girls and women, illiteracy elimination, technique training and health education.
Put forward and funded by the Chinese Government, the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education was established in 2015 to honor the outstanding contributions and innovations of individuals, institutions and organizations engaged in promoting equal education. It is the first UNESCO prize to address this theme. China, which has been devoted to guaranteeing equal educational opportunity for all, will work with international communities to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Education 2030 Framework for Action.

In March 2014, President Xi Jinping became the first Chinese head of state to visit UNESCO. In his speech, Xi announced to increase the quota for the UNESCO-China (The Great Wall) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Program from 25 to 75 each year. The program is for the benefit of developing UNESCO member states in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe and North America and Arab region.
With the support from the UNESCO headquarters, the Permanent Delegation of China to UNESCO, the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, the Department of International Exchange & Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of China, and China Scholarship Council, ECNU International Center for Teacher Education opened the UNESCO-China (The Great Wall) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Program -- ECNU Advanced Training Program for Education Administrators and Teacher Educators in March this year. Assistant UNESCO Director-General for International Affairs, Eric Fault, and Secretary-General of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, Zhou Jiagui attended the inauguration ceremony.
