ECNU will open physics, chemistry and microelectronics elite classes in partnership with a number of top-notch research institutes under the ChineseAcademy of Sciences (CAS), the national scientific think tank and academic governing body.
The signing ceremony is held on Zhongbei Campus.
The university president Chen Qun signed cooperation agreements with Zhao Tao, head of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of CAS; Ding Kuiling, head of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of CAS; Li Ruxin, head of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of CAS; and Lu Wei, head of the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of CAS at a ceremony on April 28.
Chen Qun signs cooperation agreements with directors of four CAS research institutes.
The classes are tasked with exploring new cultivation and selection modes for science talents and increasing the country's science talent reserve.
The classes will select top students from those who pass this year's National College Entrance Examinations. The candidates need to be strong-willed and make high scores in science in the exams. The classes, which involve undergraduate and postgraduate study, will make a second selection through an entry test for freshmen in related majors. Under a rolling admission system designed to hold on to students with a keen interest and big potential in academic research, the class attendants could be eliminated if they fail tests, and vice versa.
A symposium on elite training is held after the signing ceremony.
Last year, ECNU and the Shanghai Institute of Biological Sciences launched a bio science elite class last year.
Meanwhile, a number of CAS academicians, including Xu Zhizhan, He Mingyuan, Chu Junhao, Zhang Tao and Ding Kuiling, discussed with ECNU professors on how to integrate science and education to foster desirable science talents for the country.
