Silk Road Cultural Seminar held at ECNU

On March 3rd, the Silk Road Cultural Seminar was held on Zhongbei Campus. It was one of the serial events encompassed in “From Venice to Dunhuang, 2016 Spring Symposium: Discovering the Legacy of the Ancient Silk Road,” which was chiefly hosted by the Dunhuang Academy and Dunhuang Culture Promotion Foundation, jointly with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Italy and organized by East China Normal University.

The Silk Road Cultural Seminar was at ECNU.

Given the “One Belt, One Road” Strategy initiated by President XI Jinping, this seminar and the entire symposium aimed at fostering an in-depth exploration of the ancient Silk Road and its culture through the lectures, scholar and audience interactions along with exchanges and panel discussions. Dr. Stefano Beltrame, Consul General of Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, Prof. Tiziana Lippiello, Vice Rector of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Mr. Luo Huaqing, Deputy Director of Dunhuang Academy, Mr. Wang Yin, Initiator & Founder of Dunhuang Culture Promotion Foundation, Prof. Ren Youqun, Vice Chairman of the University Council and Vice President of ECNU. Prof. Hu Xiaoming, Director of ECNU University Library, and Prof. Ruan Rongchun, Director of ECNU Arts Research Institute were all honorable guests invited for this Seminar, together with other scholars and experts in the field both at home and from abroad.

Prof. Ren Youqun gave an opening remark for the occasion. He pointed out that ECNU, was established as a comprehensive research higher education institution that boosts rich cultural and humanistic spirits, is willing to participate in this great event together with scholars from domestic and foreign universities, to discover the civilization along the ancient Silk Road and to promote material and ideological progresses.

Later in his remarks, Dr. Beltrame’s highlighted that culture is an indispensable treasure for a country, a nation and the world as a whole. The dialogue of civilization between China and Italy could be dated back to as early as the Ming Dynasty, when Xu Guangqi and Matteo Ricci kept on good academic and scholastic terms. The Seminar has paved a new way for Sino-Italy cultural communication and exchange. He then emphasized that Italy held the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative in high regard and sincerely looks forward to seeing more and more academic dialogues between Chinese and Italian scholars for promoting the understanding of culture and civilization of each other and for deepening the friendship  between the two countries.

Mr. Luo Huaqing gives a lecture on “Dunhuang the City of Multiculturalism along the Silk Road” .

Prof. Hu Xiaoming gives a lecture on “Clothes & Ideology in Dunhuang Wall Paintings”.

In the morning session, three lectures focused on the Silk Road topic were given respectively by Prof. Tiziana Lippiello, Mr. Luo Huaqing, and Prof. Hu Xiaoming. The lecturers focused specifically on “Chinese classical philosophy in the Western context”, “Dunhuang the City of Multiculturalism along the Silk Road,” and “Clothes & Ideology in Dunhuang Wall Paintings”. After each, heated interaction and discussion between the lecturer and the audience, the audience came together for brain-storming and exchanging of thoughts and ideas.

In the afternoon session, two panel discussions were unveiled, each encompassing four to five Chinese and foreign scholars. Each discussion was concentrated on one given topic, “The Compatibility, Divergence and Intergrowth between China and the Western World along the Ancient Silk Road” and “Cultural Inheritance and Revitalization of Contemporary Silk Road City.”

Silk Road Cultural Seminar, is one of several  serial events encompassed in “From Venice to Dunhuang- 2016 Spring Symposium: Discovering the Legacy of Ancient Silk Road”, came to a full end with closing remarks given by Wang Yin and Hu Xiaoming.

Before the Seminar, Ren Youqun had a courtesy meeting with Stefano Beltrame, Tiziana Lippiello, Luo Huaqing and Wang Yin for an exploration of Sino-Italy cultural exchange and an international cooperation prospect between the universities.
