President of University of Haifa visits ECNU

On January 18-19, David Faraggi, President of University of Haifa in Israel, visited ECNU together with his colleagues.

Among the visitors were Baruch Marzan, Vice President of University of Haifa, Edy Barkay, head of the university’s School of Natural Science, Prof. Moshe Baruch Inbar and Prof. Ido Izhaki.

ECNU President Chen Qun and Ren Youqun, Vice President & Vice Chairman of ECNU University Council, held a work meeting with the Israeli delegation. Other attendants of the meeting included Liu Mingyao, Dean of the School of Life Science, Huang Meixu, Director of the Center of International Education, Prof. Zhou Xuhui of the School of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Yin Dongmin of the Lab of Brain Functional Genomics, and staff of the Department of International Exchanges.

Chen Qun welcomed David Faraggi’s second visit in a month, and thanked him for valuing cooperation projects. The two universities formed an intention of agreement on building an international school of applied technologies during Faraggi’s visit in December 2015. In his current visit, the two parties held in-depth discussions on mode and area of the cooperation. Both Chen Qun and David Faraggi believed that the school should cultivate high-level researched and carry out high-end innovative research. They agreed that special attention should be paid to the industrialization of research products.

The two parties reached preliminary consensus on four areas of cooperation: ecology, neurosciences, biomedicine and data science. The also exchanged views on the drafting of agreement, school blueprint, and research projects to be undertaken. They also agreed on jointly looking for supports from various foundations.

On January 19, accompanied by Ren Youqun, the delegation visited Minhang District government, and were met by Vice District Heads Yang Demei and Lei Mingqiang. Yang welcomed their visit and introduced Minhang District to them. She said Minhang was a very dynamic district with great potentials. The district government, valuing education and international development, supported the building of “international school of applied technologies,” she said. David Faraggi thanked Yang Demei for her warm reception and the district government’s support for the international school. He said the Jewish people had special feelings to Shanghai, and particularly thanked Shanghai people’s help to the Jewish race during the World War II. He introduced the four areas of cooperation the two universities had agreed upon, and stressed that he would devote every effort to the preparation of the school in the following months.

On the same day, the delegation visited Zijiang Group, and met with its board Chairman Shen Wen. David Faraggi introduced the “international school of applied technologies” to Shen Wen. He said the school would become a research platform integrating innovative production, study and research. The school would value the utilization of research product and serve the society. Shen welcomed the “international school of applied technologies” into Zizhu International Education Park. Shen said ECNU and Zijiang Group had nearly twenty years’ cooperation, and the plan of “international school of applied technologies” was in line with the strategy of Zizhu High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. He said Zijiang Group, Zizhu High-Tech Industrial Development Zone and Zizhu International Education Park would give full support to the school.

Accompanied by Tang Jifeng, General Manager of Zizhu International Education Park, David Faraggi and his colleagues visited the Zizhu International Education Park phase I construction site.

During their visit, David Faraggi and his colleagues also met with Lin Longnian, Executive Vice Director of ECNU’s Lab of Brain Functional Genomics, and discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the neuroscience area. They also met with Liu Mingyao, Dean of ECNU’s School of Life Sciences, and talked about potential cooperation in the bio-medical area.

Chen Xiaoyong, head of the School of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Xia Jianyang, Prof. Zhou Xuhui, and Prof. Li Junxiang of the school, held discussions with professors from University of Haifa on possible cooperation. Professors from University of Haifa also visited Shanghai Key Laboratory of Urbanization Ecological Resoration. The two parties decided to hold a joint workshop on ecology in March 2016.

Established in 1963, University of Haifa was built in 1963. Located in Haifa, the third largest city of Israel, it’s the largest pubic university in northern Israel. The university has more than 18,000 students, studying in six schools and five faculties. The university has many research organizations. IBM’s largest overseas research center is located in the university.
