A ground-breaking ceremony for a new lab building was held at Minhang campus on the morning of December 30, 2015. ECNU University Council Chairman Tong Shijun and ECNU President Chen Qun attended the ceremony.

Also partaking in the ceremony were Gu Yanan, Chairman of Shanghai Construction No. 7 Group (Co.) Ltd, Fei Yuezhong, President of Shanghai Construction No. 7 Group (Co.) Ltd, Shu Meng, Executive President of Shanghai Xinyu Construction Supervising Co. Ltd. Chen Qi, Chief Designer of the project, representatives of ECNU staff and students, and constructor representatives. Sun Zhen, Vice President of ECNU, was in charge of the ceremony.

Gu Yanan and Shu Meng made speeches on behalf of the constructor and supervisor. Chen Qi introduced the design of the new lab.
Tong Shijun made a speech on behalf of the university. The lab building would be an important facility of the university, the second important infrastructure project in the year 2015, after the Building for the Estuarine & Coastal Research Institute, he said. The building would be an important platform for physical science research for ECNU, he said. He hoped that the lab would become a model project, and that the constructor would minimize the influence on environment.
Chen Qun then announced the start of the project. Participants then laid the foundation for the building.
Preparation for the new lab building began in 2013, and the project was approved by the Ministry of Education in October 2014. The floor area of the building is 23,686㎡. The building will be composed of five floors above ground and one floor underground. It will house the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy and Shanghai Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance.
