NYU new leaders visit ECNU

NYU delegation visit ECNU.

On November. 20, William Berkley, newly-appointed Board Chairman of New York University, visited ECNU together with his wife Marge Berkley, soon-to-be NYU President Andrew Hamilton and his wife Jennie Hamilton, Chief academic Oficer David McLaughlin, and Executive Vice President Robert Berne.

ECNU leaders Tong Shijun, Chen Qun, Meibing, and Wang Rongming met the visitor at Zhongbei campus. Staff of the International Exchange Division were also at the meeting.

On the occasion of the NYU’s administration change, the delegation came to discuss opportunities of cooperation with ECNU. Leaders of the two universities watched file photos of the two universities and reviewed the decade-long cooperation history. Both parties spoke high of the achievements made after the two parties established long-term strategic partnership. The two universities established Shanghai New York University, build six joint R&D platforms, exchanged scholars and students, and offered joint courses in the past decade.

Mr. Hamilton, who serves as president of Oxford University now, will serve as NYU president in January, 2016. As early as 2011, he met with Yu Lizhong, then president of ECNU, when Yu visited Oxford University. The two discussed academic exchanges against the background of globalization and university management mode during the meeting. Therefore, Mr. Hamilton said he was an “old friend” of ECNU. This visit will be his first visit to ECNU on the eve of his appointment as NYU president.

The delegation visit some key laboratories at ECNU.

After the meeting, accompanied by Mr. Chen Qun, Mr. Hamilton and his delegation visited State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes, and Key Laboratory of Brain Functional Genomics.

New York University is a private research university established in 1831. It is a world-renowned university located at the heart of New York City. It is the largest private higher education institution in the United States. It ranks top 30 universities in the U.S., and is regarded as one of the new elite “Ivies.” It produced 36 Nobel Prize laureates.

NYU established a Shanghai center at ECNU in 2006. The two universities jointly established Shanghai New York University in August 2012. It was the first China-America university approved by the Ministry Education.
