"Art" is staged at ECNU.
“Art”, a contemporary comedy written by well-known French drama artist Yasmina Reza and translated by Gong Baorong, was staged at Minhang campus and Zhongbei campus on November 20 and November 25.
The drama was directed by Gao Kun of the Shanghai Drama Art Center and performed by the young artists Bao Er, Zhang Shan, and Guo Wei.
The comedy raises questions about art and friendship.
“Art” premiered on October 28, 1994 at Comédie des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The comedy, which raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerably as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes art. Yvan, is caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and keep the peace between both of them.
The English-language adaptation, translated by Christopher Hampton, opened in London's West End on October 15 1996, starring Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott, produced by David Pugh and Sean Connery, and has been running for eight years.
The performance at ECNU is a great success.
The drama was first played in China in 2001 and was quite a hit at that time. The recent performance at ECNU was also a great success. The three young Chinese actors vividly displayed the humor of the French drama through their wonderful performances.
The performance was the latest event of ECNU’s “Classic Arts Enter Campus” project. The project aims at bringing classic arts to campus, help to enrich campus life and increase the arts knowledge of students and teachers.
