China Economics Annual Conference held at ECNU

Prof. Scott Rozelle delivers a keynote speech.

The 15th China Economics Annual Conference was held at East China Normal University (ECNU) on November. 21-22. More than 600 scholars from universities and research institutions from around the world attended the conference. They explored the new normal of Chinese economy from different perspectives, responded to current economic and social hot spots,and discussed new thoughts, new ways and new moves for future economic development.

During the keynote speech section, Prof. Scott Rozelle from Stanford University delivered a speech: “Searching for the Source of China's Human Capital Inequality.” Prof Liu Guo’en of Peking University, Director of Peking University’s Health Center for Economic Research, delivered a speech: “Income Mobility Dynamics in China: On the Role of Health.” Prof. Zhao Jinhua of Michigan State University delivered a speech on the topic of “The Challenges and Opportunities of China’s Climate Change.” Prof. Chen Yuxin, guest professor of Shanghai New York University, Prof. Zhang Weiying of Peking University, Prof. Zhang Zhichao, Head of ECNU’s Financial Research Institute, also made keynote speeches.

The Conference attracts more than 600 scholars from around the world.

More than 700 articles were submitted to the conference, including over 600 Chinese articles and more than 100 English articles. A total of 144 Chinese articles and 46 English articles were selected for publication. The conference was divided into 54 panel discussions.

On Macroeconomics, the panel discussions covered development economics, political economics, performance economics, etc. On microeconomics, the panel discussions covered small-sum loans, hukou system, RMB rate, etc.

Besides that, the conference also has two characteristics. On the one hand, it shortened the time of opening and closing ceremonies so as to save time for academic exchanges. On the other hand, special panel discussions were organized. Zhou Lulai from National Defence University PLA China, for example, organized a panel discussion on national defense and economics.

Before this conference, organizers had a full overview of the previous conferences in the past 15 years and published a book based on keynote speeches in previous conferences. The name of the book is “Reform and Future.” The book reviewed the history, logic and conception behind China’s economic reforms, and predicted China’s future economic and social development.
