On October 13, University President Chen Qun met with Dr. Chung Hon Dak at the office building of Minhang campus. Chen warmly welcomed Dr. Chung and his team. He expressed sincere admiration and thanks for Dr. Chung’s generous support for the nation’s education system. He also briefly introduced the history and recent developments at ECNU, and hoped that ECNU could cooperate with the Chung Hon Dak Foundation more frequently and with greater depth. Dr. Chung thanked ECNU for its great support for the Mingde Fund, while expressing his wish to increase exchanges and cooperation with ECNU all with the aim of advancing the nation’s educational cause. Yu Shi’en, Executive Deputy Head of the Department of Student Affairs, and Lei Qili, Director of the Office of Academic Affairs, reported the auditing work of Mingde Scholarship and Mingde Teachers Award.

Ms. Lu Hongsheng said that ECNU had appraised Mingde Scholarship with care and caution, granting the awards to worthy students and teachers. She especially praised the fact that many award-winning students dedicated themselves to basic education in western and middle China, saying that this was in accordance with the mission of the Mingde Fund. She said these students were exemplary and that their acts expanded the social influence of the Mingde Fund. ECNU has made many contributions to the nation’s education system and causes, she said, adding that she was looking forward to more cooperation opportunities between the two.

In order to improve the education in western and middle China, and to further improve the quality of Chinese teachers, Dr. Chung Hon Dak has set up the Mingde Normal University Education Fund (also called Mingde Fund), which will assist 18 normal universities within the Chinese mainland from September 2011 to June 2024. The Fund includes two parts: the Mingde Scholarship and the Mingde Teachers Awards. Mingde Scholarship winners are selected annually, with each granted 2,000 yuan to further the education of the nation’s youth. The Mingde Teachers Awards are granted biannually, with three winners each winning up to 50,000 yuan and a medal congratulating the teachers on their excellent work as educators.
Since 2012, 600 ECNU students have received the Mingde Scholarship totaling 1.2 million yuan. Six ECNU teachers have won the Mingde Teachers Awards.
