Tan (center) wins the title of 2015 Model Educator of Shanghai.
On the afternoon of September 8, a meeting was held in the Grand Theater of Shanghai Academy, to commemorate the 2015 Educators of Shanghai. Among these great educators was ECNU’s own professor and Head of the Mathematical Department of ECNU, Professor Tan Shengli.
Tan (center) has worked on the forefront of teaching for 31 years.
For 31 incredible years, Professor Tan has worked at the forefront of teaching. Instead of following the path of traditional teaching he decided to make his own path of teaching. He has incorporated the law of mathematical development into his teaching practice, offering students chances to acquire new knowledge, see the formation of the knowledge and the process innovations that take place at the same time. This reform-based teaching approach is known among the students as Tan's Storm. He has also solved quite a number of incredibly difficult and open questions in algebraic Geometry. For his problem solving skills he won the award, given to him by none other than, Adbus Salam International Center of theoretical Physics. The research team headed by him has become a major base in China for the cultivation of talents in algebraic geometry. Another team headed by him in the Mathematical Department has done well in teaching reform by offering lower-grade students short courses and higher-grade students honorary Courses”. His teachings will forever be remembered not only by the students, but by the facility members that he has worked with for so many years. He will also be honored for years to come with his very prestigious award, for he is the storm that will bring about a new way of teaching.
