Han Zheng at ECNU: Teachers' instructions benefit us for life

On the afternoon of September 9, one day before the 31st “Teacher's Day”, Han Zheng, Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, paid a visit to ECNU. While here, he attended an academic seminar on uplifting teaching and learning styles, while interacting with the participating teachers and students. On behalf of the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government of Shanghai, he extended his sincere greetings to the city's teachers and other educational workers.

ECNU, as a research-based teacher's university has unfailing adhered to its motto established in 1951, i.e. “Seek Truth, Foster Originality, and Live up to the Name of a Teacher.” That very afternoon, when Han Zheng entered the Science Building with Yin Hong and Weng Tiehui, both of whom are municipal leaders, a seminar on enhancing teaching and learning styles was in progress, presided over by Professor Tan Fan from the Department of Chinese. The seminar was attended by over 30 teacher and student representatives, the guests joined the discussion and interacted with the attendees.

Teachers are essential in our growth. Their instructions and guidance benefit us for life, said Han Zheng, when he recalled the teachers in his past whom influenced him tremendously. It was their encouragement and guidance that helped him retain his thirst for knowledge even in the hardest of time. Han emphasized that education is the cornerstone of the Chinese Dream, focusing on the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the basis for enhancing national strength and city competitiveness. Education should forever be prioritized and should enjoy a position of strategic importance.

After hearing the news of ECNU's effort to improve its innovative capacity given by Tong Shijun, Chairman of the University Council, and Chen Qun, President of ECNU, Han Zheng said that education offers everyone a chance for growth and the goal of a university is to cultivate high-level talents for national development. As a key university of the state, ECNU has made indelible contribution in this aspect, especially in the cultivation of education-related specialists. Currently, due to its world rebound fame Shanghai will begin constructing a new Scientific and Technologies Center but with much more global influence and technologies, all the higher learning institutions of this great city are the backbone and driving forces for this process. The Universities in Shanghai should change their conceptions to contribute to a greater technological betterment of the city. They should also focus on reform and innovation all to strive to build a “peak on the highland” all to help incorporate all talents and skill that will make this city, this country into an innovative society.

The municipal leaders also inspected the University's State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance, and National Trusted Embedded Software Engineering Technology Research Center in the Software Engineering Institute.
