19th ISMAR Conference kicks off in Shanghai

08/18/2015

On Aug.16-21, the 19th ISMAR Conference was held in Shanghai. Nearly 700 participants from more than 28 countries participated in the conference to share and exchange their latest achievements in the field of magnetic resonance.

The ISMAR conference is held in Shanghai.

The ISMAR conference is one of the largest magnetic resonance (MR)-focused conventions worldwide, and has served as the most important platform for sharing the latest achievements in research, and cultivating new ideas for the international MR community, since 1971. It was the first time that the Biennial Conference took place in mainland China. Topics of discussion at ISMAR 2015 included: solution and solid-state NMR, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electron spin resonance (ESR), nuclear quadruple resonance (NQR), and the practical applications of all these techniques.

On Aug.16, the opening ceremony of the conference was held. Chen Qun, ECNU’s President and Local Chair of the Conference, as well as Daniella Goldfarb, a professor and Chair of ISMAR, delivered welcoming speeches in succession.

After a warm welcome to all the participants of the Conference, Chen provided an overview of the development of MR research and industry in China, then wished the conference a great success in fostering communication between members of the MR community, and in developing China’s MR research and industry as well.

Prof. Hans Wolfgang Spiess

Prof. Shimon Vega

Dr. Józef Romuald Lewandowski

Prof. Bernhard Blümich

Goldfarb expressed great thanks to all the organizers, especially ECNU, and volunteers of the Conference for their wonderful work. In her speech, Goldfarb also announced winners of this year’s ISMAR Prizes—awards that recognize important accomplishments and developments in MR and its application to various fields of science.

The principal Prize of ISMAR is the ISMAR Prize for world-renowned scientists: those who have made outstanding contributions in the field of MR. The Anatole Abragam Prize recognizes and encourages outstanding young scientists who have demonstrated great promise early in their career. The Paul Callaghan Lecture was established in 2013 to award the scientists who make exciting and significant contributions to NMR methodology and instrumentation.

The Conference  attracts nearly 700 participants from more than 28 countries.

This year, the ISMAR Prize went to Prof. Hans Wolfgang Spiess, from the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research and Prof. Shimon Vega from the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dr. Józef Romuald Lewandowski from the University of Warwick and Prof. Bernhard Blümich from RWTH Aachen University won this year’s Anatole Abragam Prize and Paul Callaghan Lecture Prize, respectively. All four recipients presented plenary lectures in the opening session.

Participants share and exchange their views during the Conference.

The International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR) is the only international scientific organization that represents the whole range of the important research field of magnetic resonance (MR), in particular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These and other MR methods are used as main research tools in a very wide range of fields including Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Materials Research, and Medicine.

The 19th ISMAR Conference was organized by East China Normal University, with co-organizers including Zhangjiang National Innovation Demonstration Zone, Shanghai International Medical Zone, The Chinese Society of Magnetic Resonance, Fudan University, and the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics.
