【Abstract】
The Captain tells the story between a captain and the sea. Focusing on some sailors in their pursuit of and battles with fish, the play raises questions about the relationship between man and his nature/environment, an eternal topic of humankind. The play begins with Captain Feng Guoliang's decision to return to an island that is soon to be developed into a large-scale bath/sauna center. In the play, Feng, a northerner who once drifted to the South China island by accident, recalls his unforgettable experiences there. He tries to rediscover the warmth that once existed between men and the sea, and the warmth that once existed between the men themselves. Desperate to see this ideal realized, Captain Feng ends up walking into the sea, pleading for forgiveness from the fish, and praying for the descendants of humankind. This play can be regarded as a modern adaptation of The Old Man and the Sea, with the island representing our city and our times.
