On April 27th and 28th, a theater production of Oliver Twist, performed by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, was held on the Zhongbei and Minhang campuses, respectively.

Set in the backdrop of 19th-century London, the play is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel, also titled Oliver Twist, which tells the story of an orphan by the same name. Oliver starts his life in a workhouse before becoming apprentice to an undertaker. He escapes and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by an elderly criminal named Fagin. In the end, Oliver has a reunion with some long-lost relatives.

During the 90-minute performance, five actors and actresses shifted between 26 different roles, vividly depicting the reality of life in 19th-century London. They earned loud applause from the audience.
One of the audience members said excitedly, “What a fantastic play! I was deeply impressed by the scene where Sally, the servant in the workhouse, struggled to sit up as she fell down again and again before she died, just to say to the evil man’s face, ‘I will meet you in hell.’ All of the performers acted vividly and impressively.”
The performers' vivid performance wins loud applause from the audience.
