On May 4, the 2013-2014 “Youth Awards” Ceremony was held at the Yifu building on ECNU’s Zhongbei Campus. Liu Gang, Vice Chairman of the China Communist Youth League—Shanghai Committee, Chen Qun, President of ECNU, Tong Shijun, Chairman of the University Council, as well as staff members from various departments, attended the ceremony.
Beginning in March, panelists have been looking for worthy recipients of the “People Touching ECNU” award, and have now selected seven inspirational ECNU students for their diligence, morality and honesty.
Li Luping
Graduate Student from the School of Social Development
Six years ago, Li Luping initiated the “Migrant Children Assistance Program” to help the children of rural migrant workers in Shanghai. She also used what she had learned from her major to carry out a field survey: she investigated the living conditions of migrant children and their families, which has brought public attention to the welfare of these children.
Yang Hongan
Undergraduate from the Fine Arts Department
Yang Hongan was born into a common family in the alpine regions of the Yunnan Province. Though he suffers from hemophilia, Yang didn’t give up on his dream and made his condition public first in Yunnan Province before being admitted to ECNU. He is among only a few hemophiliacs to have entered college. During his years at ECNU, he was a diligent student and was awarded several scholarships. In the meantime, he has encouraged people suffering from hemophilia to fight against the disease, and has attended many campaigns to advocate for greater assistance and resources.
David Janna
International Student from Colombia
A former athlete, David Ghana is a cheerful and helpful young man from Colombia. After graduating from high school, he came to ECNU because of his love for Chinese culture. Progressing from expressing simple greetings to hosting entire programs in Chinese, David gradually settled into his life in China. Apart from studying hard, David also tries his best to demonstrate gratitude and affection toward China and its people in various ways: on one occasion, by carrying a broken bicycle to the repair station for a stranger, and on another, by traveling long-distance to Yunnan as a volunteer teacher.
Zhang Yi
Undergraduate from the Preschool and Special Education School
In 2013, Zhang Yi insisted on majoring in Special Education despite receiving discouragement from her family and friends. As someone who is enthusiastic about the common welfare of all students, she has volunteered to teach kids on the weekends at a community services and mental health center for nearly eight years. Her professional skills, knowledge, patience, and love have made her one of the most popular volunteers among her students, many of whom have autism.
Cirengengcai
Undergraduate student from Meng Xiancheng College
Coming from the Lhoka Prefecture in Tibet, Cirengengcai has held the dream of becoming a teacher since he was a very young student, and has been working towards it ever since. Upon entering ECNU, he joined an aid education team and served as a volunteer teacher to Tibet for two consecutive years. Today, he is also the head of the University’s Tibetan Culture Group and has organized many volunteer teaching activities to serve students in various areas within Tibet. In addition, he also organized volunteers to help doctors of Shanghai’s Yuanda Hospital communicate with Tibetan families, some of whom are seeking help for children with congenital heart diseases. The ECNU Dance Troupe
The Dance Troupe at ECNU, made up of 31 members, is affiliated with the University’s Art Troupe as well as Art Troupe of Shanghai. The Troupe has earned prizes for four consecutive years at the National Contest of University Student Art Performances, and has presented fantastic, highly skillful performances at the Shanghai International Art Festival. The Truope has also given performances at Confucius Institutes in the U.S., Switzerland, Hungary, South Africa, and Latvia, among other countries, bringing with them the charm and glamour of oriental culture as they travel around the world.
CICA Volunteers
On May 20th, 2014, the 4th Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) was held in Shanghai, attracting attention from around the world. There was a widespread and incredible group of people who contributed to the success of the conference: they were present in every corner of the conference rooms; they traveled tirelessly between the University and the conference rooms, and they sacrificed their time of study and rest to guarantee the successful opening of the conference. They are the volunteers from this year’s CICA conference, more than 60 of whom were from ECNU.
