According to statistics from the 2014 Nature Index (NI), recently released by the Nature Publishing Group, ECNU ranks 18th among all Chinese universities (including those in Taiwan and Hong Kong), and 188th among universities and research institutes around the world.

The NI Database analyzes information about institutions hosting natural science authors from about 60,000 outstanding papers published in 68 top-ranking natural science journals. This analysis includes more than 20,000 universities and institutions around the world. The 2014 NI database includes 123 papers from ECNU, whose weighted fractional count (WFC) value increased 84.4% from the previous year. The university’s NI ranking for life science, chemistry and physics is 13, 20 and 24 in China, with the WFC score rising by 189.0%, 102.4% and 31.3% in each category, respectively.

Based on data from 2013, decisions about NI rankings in 2014 highlighted countries and institutions that contributed the most outstanding natural science research papers around the world in the previous year. China’s research output and quality have been steadily improving, and its NI in 2014 ranks second in the world, next only to the United States. 20 universities from China (Taiwan and Hong Kong included) are among the top 200 ranked by the 2014 NI.
