Shang Changrong Talks about Heritage of Peking Opera

Shang Changrong delivers a speech on the heritage of Peking Opera.

On December 11, Mr. Shang Changrong, a famous Peking opera performer, was invited by the Xingtan Gaoyi Lecture Series to deliver a speech on the subject of “The Heritage of Peking Opera.” The lecture was presided over by Xie Chao, Director of the Publicity Department of ECNU.

In his lecture, Mr. Shang introduced the origin and charming aspects of Peking opera. First, he emphasized the importance of embracing young audiences of Peking opera. He said: “Though Peking Opera is a classical art, it still belongs to the youth. Because any genre of art wants to stay vibrant, it cannot be without young audiences.” He then introduced the origin and development of Peking opera, and commented on two students’ performance on the spot.

Shang writes an inscription, meaning a good platform for cultivating talents, for the lecture series.

After the speech, Mr. Shang played one act of Judge Bao to great applause from the audience. In conclusion, Mr. Shang uttered his expectation to the young generation of performers and audiences about how to promote the heritage of Peking opera.

The Xingtan Gaoyi Lecture Series is one type of lecture series at ECNU to improve cultivation of the university by inviting famous scholars and leading experts in various cultural fields. The first lecturer of this series was Mo Yan, the first Chinese Nobel Laureate for Literature.
