The Sixth Shanghai Literature and Art Awards Ceremony is held.
On December 18, the Sixth Shanghai Literature and Art Awards Ceremony was held at the Shanghai Grand Theater. 24 winners in the areas of literature, film, music and dance, drama and painting were awarded. With outstanding achievement in Chinese literary theory, Xu Zhongyu and Prof. Qian Gurong, two professors of ECNU, received Lifetime Achievement Awards, the highest level of its kind in Shanghai.

On the ceremony, Han Zheng, the Communist Party Chief of Shanghai, presented the Awards to Xu and Qian. Xu and Qian are both prestigious scholars and educators, and both have been working and living in ECNU for almost all their lives.

Prof. Xu’s theory of Chinese literature is very influential in the country and Chinese Language for University Students edited by him has become standard textbooks for most university students in China. The 100-year-old professor is not only influential for his academic achievements but for personal character and morality as well. Last year, Xu donated one million yuan to set up a scholarship, helping students who are excellent in both learning and morality.

Prof. Qian is also an influential literary theorist in China. Early in 1950s, his On Literature and Humanity opened a new era of various theoretic trends of literature in China. And his On Characters of ‘Thunderstorm’ has set a fantastic standard for interpreting the arts and human nature of classic literature works.
Started in 1991, Shanghai Literature and Art Award is the highest honor for literature and art in the city. Restarting after twelve years, the Shanghai Literature and Art Awards Ceremony reasserted its position as the highest recognition for Shanghai literature and art.
