Tong Shijun (center) chats with Tibetan graduates.
“Every day of the past four years are still alive in our memories although our life in ECNU will be concluded very soon. We can still clearly recall the 2012 Tibetan New Year Party that you spent with us at the Campus Center.” The letter to Prof. Tong Shijun, University Chairman of ECNU, was written by Quan Pei, a Tibetan student who will graduate from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature this year. On behalf of all this year’s Tibetan graduates, Quan expressed their love and appreciation of the University.
In this letter written in fluent Chinese, Quan Pei, a member of “Shanghai University Students of the Year 2012”, retrospected the four-year life he and his Tibetan friends spent in ECNU. Statistics show that there are over 120 Tibetan students living and studying on the campus. Quan recalled the care and love they obtained from various departments and schools of the University. In the past four years, the University has provided them a lot of opportunities to enrich both their knowledge and experiences.
“Being Excellent Teachers of Tibetan Plateau”, a volunteer activity of providing teaching assistance to Tibet, was one of such experiences. Quan and some other Tibetan students of ECNU raised supplies worthy of nearly 100,000 yuan for five Tibetan primary schools by this activity. It was this kind of experiences that helped the Tibetan students find their location in the University, improve their competence, and win respects from their fellow students.

“After reading your letter, I do want to send you back to the Tibetan Plateau and tell your families in person how the University is proud of you!” Despite his busy arrangement in the graduation season, Tong still spared time to answer the Tibetan graduates with an enthusiastic letter.
In his letter, Tong fully affirmed Quan and his fellow Tibetan friends’ work and achievements in both their studies and volunteer activities. As a university leader with important influence on China’s basic education, Tong hoped the Tibetan graduates would spread what they had learned in ECNU around their hometown and try their best to promote the development of the country.

On June 15th, ECNU held a grand commencement for this year’s graduates. On the afternoon of the special day, Tong spent one hour with 17 Tibetan graduates and chatted with them. The students talked about their love to the University and their plan of the future. Tong shared his experience in Tibet with the students and expressed his best wishes to them. “Use what you have gained from ECNU to serve for your hometown and make your hometown much better with your efforts,” said Tong.
