04/14/2014

Zhang Jianyu (a violinist) and Chen Cong (a violoncellist), two undergraduate students of the Department of Music, successfully passed the entrance examination of Asia Youth Orchestra (AYO) a few days ago.

The two ECNU students will be admitted into AYO with full scholarships, and they will participate in AYO’s Asian performance tour to be held in this summer. Jin Xin and Cai Jingjin, two young teachers of the Department of Music, are Zhang and Chen’s instructors respectively.

Asia Youth Orchestra (AYO) is one of the two top youth orchestras in the world. The 100 members of AYO are pre-professional musicians in China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Chosen through highly competitive auditions held throughout the region, they are together for six weeks each summer, initially for a three-week Summer Festival and Rehearsal Camp in Hong Kong, then for a three-week international concert tour with celebrated conductors and solo artists.

Since its inaugural concerts in 1990, AYO has played 325 concerts in Asia, Europe, the US and Australia to an audience of more than one million concertgoers. Millions more around the world have seen and heard the orchestra on CNN, CNBC Asia, NHK Television, Radio and Television Hong Kong, and Star TV.
