ECNU Delegation Attend 8th Global Confucius Institute Conference

The 8th global Confucius Institute Conference took place on Dec. 7-8 in Beijing. Ren Youqun, Vice President &Vice Chairman of ECNU’s University Council, was invited to attend the conference and delivered a speech at a sub forum of the conference.

The conference brought together university presidents and heads of Confucius Institutes from all over the world. More than 2,200 attendees from over 400 Confucius Institutes attended the event, along with representatives from Chinese universities.

 

Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Confucius Institute is a non-profit public institution, designed to help foreigners learn about China through courses in language and culture. So far, China has established 440 Confucius Institutes globally. And over 500 Confucius Classrooms are in operation worldwide at middle and primary schools. About 850,000 students have registered at these institutions, and more than 20,000 activities have been held since the first Confucius Institute was established in 2004.

Ren has a meeting with Edwin C. Constable, Vice Rector of the University of Basel.

 

On the afternoon of Dec. 7, in his speech delivered at a sub forum of the conference, Ren introduced ECNU’s cases of helping Chinese teachers of Primary and secondary schools obtaining certificates. During the event, Ren also had a meeting with Edwin C. Constable, Vice Rector of the University of Basel, on issues of the cooperation between the two universities and the future work planning of the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel.

In 2013, the development of ECNU’s work in Confucius Institute is thriving: In April, the Confucius Institute at Tulane University, USA, was established. In September, the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel was set up. In November, the Confucius Institute at the University of Turin, Italy, spent its 5th birthday. In December, Gianmaria Ajani, Victor of the University of Turin attended the 8th global Confucius Institute Conference and signed a second 5-year memorandum with Hanban.
