BGI Tech President Wang Jian Visits ECNU

On September 24, Wang Jian, President of BIG Tech and Honorary Dean of BGI in Shenzhen, and his colleagues visited ECNU. President Chen Qun met the guests at the School of Life Sciences on Minhang Campus. Prof. Liu Mingyao, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Prof. Wen Jiemin, deputy director of Institute of Biomedical Sciences and relevant persons of the International Office attended the meeting.

According to the meeting, ECNU will have strategic cooperation with BGI in scientific research, talent cultivation and international communication. The purpose of Wang Jian’s visit was to further implement the cooperative education program of ECNU and University of Copenhagen in Zizhu International Education Park. During the meeting, both sides held a discussion on cooperation model as well as enrollment and fully recognized the importance of this cooperation. Chen Qun expressed his hope of stepping up the implement of the cooperation to build an education program of world-famous brand and co-establishing a large data platform with BGI

 

After the meeting, Wang Jian gave an academic report entitled "Genetic Technology for the Benefit of Mankind". According to the report, as human have entered into the Big Data Area, BGI will focus on interpreting the mysteries of life and establishing an international system of scientific and technological development. The witty humor of Wang Jian not only made teachers and students of ECNU fully experience his academic charm, but also learn his painstaking and excellent entrepreneurial spirit.

Since 2007, the annual income of BGI TECH has rapidly increased at the speed of 3 times of the previous year. Meanwhile, BGI has contributed to 20% to 30% of all papers of Chinese universities, institutions and companies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Besides, BGI has completed a series of genome researches with international advanced level, including the “Chinese section” of the International Human Genome Project, the International HapMap Project, the Rice Genome Project, the Silkworm Genome Project, the Chicken Genome Project, and the Study on anti SARS etc. Nature describes BGI as “the ambition of a Chinese Academy is creating the world’s largest gene factory”. BGI TECHwas also named as the 2013 China top ten most innovative companies with many outstanding young talents. According to Nature Publishing Index 2012 Global, BGI ranked 119th in the list of “Global 200” scientific research institutions and 6th among Chinese scientific research institutions on the list.
