Although autumn is fast approaching Shanghai, the noon heat still burns the skins of about 3550 sophomore on ECNU’s campus. These students have been undergoing their 11-day military training, a necessary part of their education, since August 20.
During the training, the students have to dress up with military fatigues while learning and rehearsing a bunch of marches, chants and drills. Although students did feel some discomfort while training in sweaty clothes in the glaring heat, most students still enjoyed being part of a group going through rigorous exercises. For them, the military training is not only a campus tradition that should be maintained, but also a special experience to temper both their bodies and willpower.
Most students and teachers on campus said such training could teach students discipline, the spirit of teamwork and endurance. “By going through this tough training, we bond faster and a sense of belonging to the university can be cultivated,” said a sophomore, “And I have made a lot of new friends during the training.”
